ZoneAlarm from Zone Labs is a consitently highly recommended, easy to use, free firewall software solution. Along with the FREE version, there are also PLUS and PRO versions should you feel the need for the added features. Personally, I think they're overkill for the home user.

Browsing the internet without anti-virus protection is suicide in today's world, if you can't afford, or feel you don't need the extra protection afforded by a bought version such as the excellent McAffee, then please consider AVG as an alternative.

The most reliable free email account I have come across is from Yahoo! Your email account size is more than double that of other popular free email addresses like Hotmail and the spam blocking features are equally more impressive.
