Three Card Poker

Three card poker is a popular form of casino poker played between the player and the dealer only. It is really 2 games in one and the player may play one or both and can bet different amounts on each. Some casinos insist the player either plays both or just one but the option to play either or both games is most common.

The two games you can play are called "Pair Plus" and "Ante and Play".

Pair Plus

There is no real skill in playing Pair Plus...in fact there is NO skill in playing pair plus poker as it all comes down entirely to the luck of the draw. In pair plus the player is dealt 3 cards face down and so is the dealer. However, in Pair Plus you are paid solely on the value of your own cards, so it doesn't matter at all what the dealer has! Pays are based on a pay table which typically gives the player a 1:1 ratio for a pair, 3:1 for two pair and so on up to 40:1 for a straight flush. Anything lower than a pair pays nothing.

Ante and Play

More in the spirit of poker, play here begins with the player placing an wager on the table area marked "ante". Following this he is dealt 3 cards and may choose to either fold and lose the ante, or bet and play. The bet value is double the ante amount. After the bet has been placed the dealer reveals his cards and needs at least a queen high to "qualify". Possible outcomes are:

  • Dealer does not qualify: Player receives 1:1 on ante and his bet money back.
  • Dealer wins. Player loses ante, bet and Pair Plus bet if any was placed.
  • Player wins. Both play and ante bet win 1:1.
  • Play ties leader. A push, all bets returned.
In addition to the above, if the player wins then a separate Ante bonus comes into play. The Ante bonus will award a 1:x bonus based on the rank of the players hand. Anything about a straight usually qualifies for some kind of bonus from this - the pay table at the casino will tell you how much.

Ante and Play Strategy Tips

Quite simply the bare minimum strategy is to play on any hand ranked queen high or better.
